Mayor Anderson Proclaims Friday, August 1 “Children’s Savings Day”
Greetings from Nashville! I wanted to let everyone know about a great program a client of ours is introducing to the community this week. Recognizing the need for increased awareness, Reliant Bank is launching a financial literacy program designed to help the strong percentage of Americans that are at a loss when it comes to monetary issues and financial advisory. To help kick-off the program, Williamson County Mayor Rogers Anderson has proclaimed August 1, 2008 to be “Children’s Savings Day.”
Reliant Bank is offering a series of bank camps and the opportunity for children to start their first savings account. The first one will be held on Saturday from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Inflatables, food and games are all part of bank camp designed to make children Super Savers!
Bring the kids out to Reliant Bank in Cool Springs on Saturday to help Peritus kick off this program!

The New York Times today is reporting on a television station in Las Vegas that is adding product placement to its newscast. Read the story here. The photo below shows McDonald’s iced coffee drinks on the anchor desk. The station’s news director said “he was not allowing the McDonald’s cups on the so-called straight news portion of the morning report, which is before 7 a.m., but on a lighter, news-and-lifestyle show that goes from 7 to 9 a.m.” Journalists will hate this and advertisers will love it.

On Friday, July 18th our summer interns presented their projects to management. The presentations were pretty impressive, almost as impressive as their bowling skills. Our entire team ended the day bowling at Lucky Strike.

I want to thank the Nashville Kiwanis Club for inviting me to speak to their group on Friday at the Maxwell House Hotel. Lauren Reed and Katie Adkisson from our Nashville team joined me for a great lunch with some wonderful people. Special thanks to Missy Acosta for introducing me to the audience. You can visit their website at: www.kiwanisofnashville.org They have a pretty cool fundraising raffle going on as well – they are giving away a Corvette! Next week they get another Kentuckian to entertain them – NASCAR legend Darrell Waltrip is their speaker.
Here’s an excerpt of my remarks. I shared some of my White House experiences with the group, and made some observations about politics and public service:
“…Yes, that actually happened. Someone actually took time out of their day to write me an email to say they wanted to execute me. But, despite the encouragement of my friends on the left, I never considered for a moment that public service isn’t worth it. It is worth it. When people ask me today about my experience in The White House and in politics, I strive—especially to college students and younger people considering a political career—to stress that it is worth it. If too many of our best and brightest decide that public service isn’t worth it, that civic duty is not important, we will wind up with a government of the mediocre. We will wind up with a government full of people who are there for the wrong reasons. We will wind up with a government that will be utterly objectionable to us all…”

Outside Magazine just named Louisville to it’s list of the top 20 towns in the U.S. Coming in at #7, on the list that includes Washington D.C., Sacramento, New Orleans and Seattle, Louisville gets props for our great park system (and the in-the-works plan to create 4,000 acres of new green space), the re-birth of Downtown and our client 21c Museum Hotel and its restaurant Proof on Main. The hotel and restaurant are called the “city’s hippest address.”
It looks like people are catching on to the fact that there’s great stuff going on here besides just the first Saturday in May.

There is turmoil in the newspaper industry. Real, gut-wrenching, industry restructuring hold on to your seatbelts turmoil. The pale economy is accelerating the pain. Layoffs and leadership changes are common. Advertising sales are sagging at major newspapers and larger dailies are racing to figure out what to make now that it is clear the “horseless carriage” will be replaced.
These dramatic changes have an impact on any business who wants to reach newspaper consumers through advertising or through news coverage. For starters, fewer pages and fewer reporters mean there is less space for news. Less space for news items means story ideas have to be very sharp to be accepted.
For advertisers, it is important to understand why and when a newspaper ad is useful and who you are now reaching. Also, most newspapers have ramped up their websites and work hard to create cross platform ad packages. These can be tricky to evaluate as web measurement is still evolving, as well.
The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism has issued their look at the “The Changing Newsroom.” The 36-page study analyzes what is being gained and lost in America’s changing newsrooms.
Change is hard. And for an old newspaperman like myself, watching newspapers reinvent themselves can be very sad.

Peritus Public Relations has grown, again. Now, we’re in Lexington, Kentucky. Our office opened on July 1 at 300 West Vine Street – just steps away from Rupp Arena. (It’ll be hard to resist the temptation to slip across the pedway on UK game days.)
We didn’t wait to unpack the moving boxes to hit the ground running. We’ve already helped Miller Brewing Company in Milwaukee develop employee communications, including a brochure and intranet content, for the company’s merger with Coors Brewing.
Personally, that’s exactly the kind of high-performance energy and entrepreneurial spirit that motivates me to step up as managing director of our new office. I think the people we work with in the Lexington area will be impressed, too. I can’t wait to make introductions!

When Centrum Nashville asked us to plan a grand opening for Anslee Farms (www.ansleefarms.com), we developed a series of launch events that introduced this old-fashioned community with modern amenities to the Huntsville market.
In addition to a ribbon cutting with Huntsville officials and a reception for realtors, we planned an old-fashioned carnival with an “Americana” theme. Playing on the idea that Anslee Farms was designed with the concept of an old-fashioned neighborhood in mind, visitors enjoyed carnival games, BBQ, a barbershop quartet and toured the new sales center. All proceeds went to Providence Elementary School. Check out our photos of the event below.
