Hope for Newspapers?

The news this year has been relentlessly, sickeningly, awful for newspapers. However, Editor & Publisher is reporting on new data from Scarborough Research that some newspapers are expanding their total market penetration with their web sites. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (N.Y.) reaches 81 percent of its designated market area (DMA) when both print and online audiences are counted. Perhaps this is the moment when newspapers figure out how to reach new audiences rather than bemoan the loss of old readers.
