New City Harvest Program Announced
LOUISVILLE, KY (November 28, 2007) - Second Street Corporation, owner of landmark multi-club venue at 2nd and Jefferson Street, today announced a new name and future plans for its 60,000 square foot downtown entertainment complex. Owners Ward Plauche and Don Blackburn made the announcement to mark the beginning of a series of improvements and renovations at the complex.
Locally-owned and operated for nearly 20 years, City Block is credited with pioneering the downtown entertainment renaissance and continues to grown as part of the city’s recent revitalization. Second Street Corp. also announced a partnership with Kentucky Harvest to form City Harvest Louisville - a community call for action during the holiday season.
The new name, City Block, was unveiled as the beginning of the $5 million upgrade to keep City Block at the forefront of the downtown entertainment scene. The name City Block represents both the size and shape of the entertainment complex. The venue has been a pioneer in the Louisville music scene, hosting more than 500 live shows since opening its doors nearly two decades ago. The complex has consistently brought the music industry’s biggest names to Louisville with national recording artists such as: Toby Keith, Garth Brooks, Foghat, REO Speedwagon, Shania Twain, Third-Eye Blind, Kenny Chesney, Cheap Trick, Dixie Chicks, Kansas, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Queens of the Stone Age and Modest Mouse.
“It is an exciting time for downtown Louisville and for City Block,” said Ward Plauche’, owner of 2nd Street Corporation. “As the city grows, we’re growing with it. It was the potential of downtown Louisville that attracted our attention nearly 20 years ago. As we continue to move forward, City Block is not only committed to providing quality entertainment, but we remain committed in doing our part to help downtown Louisville develop.”
The $5 million upgrade plan includes investments in the infrastructure, club renovations, enhancing the state-of-the-art sound and lighting system and adding security and parking. The plan includes new venues such as LIST and other new club formats which will be announced next year. LIST is an exclusive nightclub that co-brands parties with select sponsors and features VIP tables and requires proper dress. Also in the works is Alley Theater, a repertory theater that will feature cutting-edge content with the first production slated to debut in 2008.
City Block owners have strengthened the management team naming Eric Wiegel as President of Second Street Entertainment. Wiegel is the booking agent and concert producer for all events at City Block. Wiegel was formerly Vice President of Events at the Kentucky Center for the Arts and was charged with booking and producing nationally known artists for Whitney Hall, The Bomhard Theater and the Brown Theater.
Kentucky Harvest and City Block have teamed to form City Harvest Louisville, a community campaign to collect food during the holiday season. Located at 200 South Second Street, City Block will serve as the collection point for all donated items. City Harvest Louisville will be an annual community effort to help those in need during the holiday season. Food will be collected until New Year’s Eve with all donations going to Kentucky Harvest.
